See you all this weekend!!
Following a successful inaugural weekend-long event last spring to commemorate the cassette label’s first year in business, Gloss Records decided to bring “Gloss Weekend” back for a second year. From May 19-21, a total of 15 bands will play three shows, and the label will host a free Sunday night after party as well.
Today, Gloss put weekend passes on sale for what’s being billed as “Gloss Weekend 2” for $25. The passes—limited to just 100 wristbands—guarantee entry to all three shows (and $5 savings overall) and a free cassette compilation that features acts on Gloss’ roster. Here’s who’s playing.
Friday, May 19 at Cactus Club, 9 p.m.
The Fatty Acids
Saturday, May 20 at Jazz Gallery, 4 p.m. (all ages)
Saturday, May 20 at Riverwest Public House, 9 p.m.
Surgeons in Heat
Sunday, May 21 at High Dive (free after party), 9 p.m.
Gloss co-founders Harrison Colby and Joe Peterson spinning records
All Gloss cassettes will be marked down to $5 (from $6) and records will be $10 (usually $15). May 19 will also mark the release of NO/NO’s new EP, which will also be available for the reduced rate of $5. Last year’s weekend passes sold out, so act fast.
We're excited to announce Gloss Weekend 2 will take place May 19-21 at Cactus Club, the Jazz Gallery, and the Riverwest Public House! Our growth over the last year has prompted the expansion of another showcase (and venue!). Headliners this year include The Fatty Acids, Soul Low, and Foreign Goods.
Full lineup and ticket preorders coming soon!
IT'S HERE! The new album from Piles is available to stream through the band's bandcamp and to purchase the LP via the Gloss Records online store. Piles will celebrate the release of the record with a free show this Friday Riverwest Public House Cooperative with Red Stuff and blue unit. Check out the poster below!
Piles may consider themselves as "just a punk band," but to the listener it's a lot more, as evident on their latest mini-offering "Expeller." Yes, it's fast. Yes, it's messy. But the band's effects-laden nods to shoegaze and their gripping vocal melodies propel their music farther than just three chords and the truth...but of course those are in there too. On Expeller, the band peaks out from behind their wall of noise and allows for a clearer glimpse into the quality of their songwriting and the intensity of their playing.
Expeller will officially be released March 14th on Gloss Records. Piles plays their album release show at the Riverwest Public House on March 17th. Admission is $5, or $10 with a vinyl.
We are getting ready for The Fatty Acids' Dogs of Entertainment record release week here at Gloss Records! We have a ton of events throughout the week to celebrate the long-awaited release of the album..

The Fatty Acids have been a strange fixture in the local scene for nearly a decade now. The band’s quirky, often chaotic, but always lyrically-driven songs have attracted Milwaukee show-goers throughout their long existence as the city’s leading scramble-poppers. Let’s face it...most bands don’t last as long as The Fatty Acids, and when they do those bands end up watching many of their peers rise and fall and fizzle out. But for those rare acts that do stick around, it’s often on albums 3, 4 or 5 that their best work shines through.
Such is the case for Dogs of Entertainment. After an almost 3-and-a-half year gap between 2013’s Bolero, the Fatties emerge with their strongest, most mature album; trading the complex arrangements and spastic riffage of their past records for a deeply introspective and stripped down minimalism. A punkish disregard for perfection flows throughout Dogs, but The Fatties make it feel like embracing a more mellow approach to experimentation. Dogs of Entertainment will be released through Gloss Records on 2/21 on vinyl LP. You can pre-order the record here. The band will be playing two release shows to celebrate, an all ages show at Anodyne on 2/24 (tickets here) and a 21+ performance at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn on 3/3 (tickets at the door).

Milwaukee Record premiered the first single from Dashcam’s upcoming EP/Collection Dreamwave, “Fire Escape” featuring Margaret Butler from GGOOLLDD. They had this to say about it!
“Thanks to the success of shows like Stranger Things and films like Drive, the gauzy, retro-future sounds of the 1980s are enjoying a surge in popularity not seen since, well, the actual 1980s. In Milwaukee, there’s no shortage of artists mining the “Where’s the beef?” decade for musical inspiration, though few do it quite like Donny Jankowski—a.k.a. Dashcam. The Milwaukee producer has spent the past few years remixing everyone from GGOOLLDD and Klassik to NO/NO and Rio Turbo, giving each a dash of synthwave nostalgia and Trapper Keeper flair. Now, Dashcam is branching out into original material—and getting some help from a group of local heavy hitters.
“Fire Escape,” the first single from Dashcam’s upcoming Dreamwave EP, features GGOOLLDD frontwoman Margaret Butler turning in an especially smoldering vocal performance over an especially glistening electro backdrop. (Think Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but without all the grand theft auto.) Dreamwave, due soon on limited edition cassette from Gloss Records, will also feature vocals from NO/NO’s Cat Ries, and will be mixed by Kiing’s Sean Foran. If that’s not enough to get you excited for the project, then you’re [insert ’80s reference here].”
Marielle Allschwang’s voice has been described as “a timeless instrument, full of sadness, beauty, and independence, rooted in the fertile ground of Americana but twisted into the wilding sky of the avant-garde” (Matt Wild, Milwaukee Record). In her performances, she “[commands] the stage with hushed intensity” (Evan Rytlewski, Shepherd Express).
Gloss Records released Allschwang’s debut album, Dead Not Done, on cassette in 2015; it was featured on year-end “Best Albums of Milwaukee” lists by Milwaukee Record, Shepherd Express, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and lauded for its “Lynchian beauty and grace” (Matt Wild, Milwaukee Record).
Marielle Allschwang has teamed up with filmmaker/animator Heather Hass to produce a video for “Aquarium.” Combining esoteric, female-centric imagery, intricate set design, and obsessive rotoscope and cinemagraph techniques, Hass, Allschwang, and their team of collaborators are thrilled to present a strange and beautiful new creation at Anodyne on December 9th.
Last but not least, we welcome the epically talented Klassik as our special guest to open the show.
(Note: Vinyl is currently only available if you come to the show)
"STAY IN YO LANE" - AUDIO
In anticipation of Foreign Goods‘ first release on Gloss Records, here is taste of the 3 song live EP set to come out on Tuesday, Sept. 13th. The first single, “Stay in Yo Lane,” is a James Brown-esque cautionary tale to mind your own f***king biz. Enjoy.
The highly anticipated sophomore record from Milwaukee weirdo-pop outfit Soul Low is out now on Gloss!
"It’s a dense work, with songs that unfold as tumultuous suites. The band’s pop sensibilities are still intact—the surfy “Be Like You” may be the catchiest song they’ve ever written—but by and large Nosebleeds’ hooks take their time to reveal themselves. Balistrieri still sings in his usual seasick, fingernail-biting quaver, but he rarely plays his nervousness for laughs; instead, he’s singing about heartbreak, mortality, alienation and other indignities. There’s humor there, but it’s black and understated" - Shepherd Express
"Working in elements of surf, pop, jazz, and who knows what else, “Nosebleeds” is beautifully awkward in a blend that only Soul Low could create" - Breaking & Entering
The music video for NO/NO's "Television" is now available courtesy of Milwaukee Record. The video is directed by NO/NO bassist Ryan Reeve and stars body builder/actor Kellen Milad.
Enjoy the sweat-drenched nyon-tastic visual!
